In 1909 Santa Barbara sat on the Pacific coast between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the sea, and it had become one of California's best-known winter resorts. Visitors arrived by Southern Pacific train, which had linked the town to the wider state since the 1880s, and they stayed in hotels like the Potter, which catered to tourists and to wealthy families who came for the mild climate. Local farms grew lima beans, citrus, and other crops, and agriculture, tourism, and the town's growing number of residents shaped daily life along the waterfront and the streets near the business district. Residents also took pride in the old Franciscan mission founded in 1786, which they promoted as a symbol of the town's Spanish heritage. A panoramic view like this one would have shown a community that people at the time knew mainly as a healthful and handsome seaside destination.
