Santa Barbara in 1914 was a county seat of roughly 10,000 people, and its economy blended tourism, farming, and the newcomers who had moved west for the mild climate. The American Film Manufacturing Company, known as the Flying A, had opened studios in town around 1912, so movie crews sometimes shot scenes on local streets and beaches beside the older waterfront trades. Citrus and walnut orchards kept spreading through the valleys inland, and their harvests filled wagons bound for the depot. That summer the war in Europe had begun, and residents with family abroad followed the cable news closely in the local papers. Many Santa Barbarans also traveled north by train to see the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco that year.
