Santa Cruz, California, in 1906 was a coastal lumber and farming town on Monterey Bay, where redwood from the Santa Cruz Mountains was sawed at local mills and shipped out by rail and wharf. The Southern Pacific branch line connected the town to the wider state, and its depot and tracks shaped the downtown streets that a panorama like this one would have shown. Agriculture added to the economy, with apples, berries, and other crops grown on the surrounding terraces and valleys. Residents knew the town for its beaches, its mild climate, and the Mission Santa Cruz, founded in 1791, which still stood as a reminder of the Spanish colonial past. The April 1906 earthquake, centered far to the north near San Francisco, was felt across the region and reminded people along the coast how exposed their towns were.
