Santa Maria, California, in 1911 was a farm town in the Santa Maria Valley of San Luis Obispo County, where wheat, barley, and beans were grown on land that had been dry farmed for only a few decades. Sugar beets were becoming an important crop in the valley, and the sugar factory at nearby Betteravia gave growers a local market for their harvest. The Pacific Coast Railway, which carried freight and passengers to San Luis Obispo and the coast, tied the valley's farms and warehouses to larger markets. Residents of the time would have known Santa Maria as a quiet agricultural center, with its prospects tied to the weather, the railroad schedule, and the price of crops.
