Santa Barbara in 1908 was a county seat of under ten thousand people, and an increasing share of its income came from winter visitors and the wealthy households building estates in the hills above town. The Potter Hotel, opened in 1903 on the bluff overlooking the Pacific, was among the grandest of the resort hotels that drew guests seeking mild, dry weather and sea views. Southern Pacific trains carried travelers and new residents in from the south, and that steady flow supported a busy trade in real estate, boarding houses, and carriage hire. Residents would have known their town as a place where the mission, the harbor, and hotel verandas sat side by side, with the Santa Ynez Mountains rising steeply behind it.
