Santa Monica, on the bay of the same name, was in 1908 a seaside town of a few thousand residents that had grown up around the Southern Pacific rail line and the tourist trade. Its bluffs, beach, and mild winters drew visitors from Los Angeles, a short trolley or train ride away, and hotels, bathhouses, and boarding houses depended on that summer and winter traffic. Local life centered on the downtown business blocks, churches, and the growing number of residential lots being sold to families who wanted a home near the water. The panorama shows a coastline that still looked open and lightly built, a place where the ocean and the town's commercial future were closely tied together.
