Citrus, a citrus-growing settlement in the San Gabriel Valley near Azusa, Los Angeles County, sat in 1911 at the center of a Southern California orange boom. Irrigated groves ran across the valley floor, and packing houses and shipping depots tied the crop to national markets by rail. Electric interurban lines, including Henry E. Huntington's Pacific Electric system, made the valley towns easier to reach from Los Angeles, and the same decade brought fast growth in population and land sales. The distant mountain ridge in the view was the country residents watched daily, and they knew it both as a water source and as a backdrop to their livelihoods.
