Wendling, California, was a small rural settlement in the state's interior farmland in 1911, when the San Joaquin Valley was turning from cattle and wheat ranching toward irrigated orchards, vineyards, and row crops. Railroads, chiefly the Southern Pacific, carried fruit and grain to market, and farm families depended on those lines and on water from canals and wells. That year Californians were also living through the Progressive reforms of Governor Hiram Johnson, and in October voters approved women's suffrage in the state. A scene like this one would have meant far more to its residents as a view of their own fields, buildings, and neighbors than as a record of a place in general.
