Taft, in the western San Joaquin Valley of Kern County, was a young oil town in 1911, only about two years old and named for William Howard Taft, then president. Its growth followed the rapid development of the Midway-Sunset oil field, where drilling crews, teamsters, and pipeline and refinery workers streamed in and pushed up the local population. Life in such a town revolved around the derricks, the company offices, and the rail and freight connections that carried crude and supplies, while the valley's farms and cattle ranches surrounded the new streets. Residents of the period would have known Taft mainly as a place of wells and payrolls, a settlement whose fortunes rose and fell with the price of oil and the pace of new drilling.
