Corona del Mar in 1908 was a young seaside subdivision on the Orange County coast, carved from the vast Irvine Ranch and still more promise than town. Orange County itself had been split from Los Angeles County only about two decades earlier, in 1889, and the surrounding land was devoted mostly to farming, especially grain and lima beans, while the coast was being marketed to buyers from inland. The Pacific Electric interurban line had reached the Newport Beach area in 1905, making the bay and beaches a short ride from Los Angeles for summer visitors and prospective lot buyers. Residents and developers alike spoke of the place as a quiet resort and residential district, a counterpoint to the agricultural valley behind it. The panorama shows a landscape still in transition, where the bluffs and open coast were only beginning to fill with houses.
