Berkeley in 1908 was a small college town on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, with the University of California at its center on the slopes above the streets. The 1906 earthquake and fire across the bay had pushed many families east, and the town grew quickly as new houses went up on the flatlands and hillsides. Much of local life revolved around the university, its students, and the faculty who lived in the neighborhoods, while Shattuck Avenue carried the shops and businesses that served them. Southern Pacific trains connected the town to Oakland and San Francisco, and electric streetcars were making short trips between the East Bay cities a routine part of daily life.
