Altadena, California, in 1908 was a small foothill community at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, just northeast of Pasadena in Los Angeles County. Its economy rested on citrus orchards and deciduous fruit, and on winter visitors from the East and Midwest who came for the mild climate and filled the local hotels and boarding houses. The Mount Lowe Railway, which opened in 1893 with its lower terminus in Altadena, carried sightseers up the canyon toward Echo Mountain and the Mount Lowe resort, which made the town a gateway to the mountains. Residents knew the area for its orange groves, its clear winter air, and the steady stream of tourists arriving by electric interurban car from Los Angeles and Pasadena.
