In 1908, the Golden Gate was the only ocean outlet for San Francisco's bay, and the city was still two years into rebuilding after the April 1906 earthquake and fire that had destroyed much of its downtown. Ships carrying lumber, grain, and goods from across the Pacific passed between the headlands on their way to the city's wharves, which made the strait the front door of a port that handled much of West Coast commerce. Ferries still carried most commuters across the bay to Oakland, Sausalito, and other landings, since the bridge that now spans the strait would not open until 1937. Residents who lived there would have known the Golden Gate as the source of the city's wealth and as a gateway to Asia and Australia, and the rebuilt waterfront was a sign of how quickly the city was recovering.
