Long Beach in 1908 was a young seaside town on the Los Angeles County coast, where amusements along the beachfront drew crowds from the city inland. Hotels, bathhouses, and boardinghouses depended on summer visitors, while many residents also worked on small farms, in local trades, and in the land sales that brought newcomers into the surrounding tracts. The population was still small enough that most people knew one another, and churches, clubs, and town gatherings shaped daily life nearly as much as the ocean did. A view of the town from this period shows a community still deciding what it would become, with the beach and its visitors as its chief asset.
