In 1908 Long Beach was a young seaside town of a few thousand people on the Los Angeles County coast, and its fortunes were tied to the land boom that had swept Southern California in the years before. Many residents worked in real estate, building, and the local trades that served new households, while farms and orchards in the surrounding country supplied the town. The national Panic of 1907 had tightened credit and slowed sales, so local boosters and merchants were watching carefully to see whether newcomers would keep arriving. Churches, schools, and civic clubs gave the community its social structure, and this panoramic view captures a place still deciding how large and prosperous it would become.
