Long Beach, California, in 1908 was a seaside town of about two decades' standing, having been platted in the 1880s as a temperance-minded resort and incorporated as a city in 1897. Its economy rested on visitors, real estate sales, and the small trades that served them, while the Pacific Electric interurban cars carried day-trippers and homebuyers down from Los Angeles. Residents were watching the shoreline and the nearby harbor work at San Pedro, which promised to shape the region's shipping and growth. The town's civic life centered on churches, schools, and its beachfront, and the modest downtown of that era would later be heavily rebuilt after the 1933 earthquake.
