El Portal, California, in 1908 was a small railroad stop on the Merced River at the western edge of Yosemite, and its reason for existing was the Yosemite Valley Railroad, which had reached the spot from Merced only a year earlier. Passengers stepped off the train here and boarded stagecoaches and wagons for the climb of about a dozen miles up the canyon road to Yosemite Valley. Lumber and freight moved along the same line, so the settlement depended on both tourist traffic and commercial hauling. The valley had returned to federal management in 1906 after years of state control, and visitor numbers were rising. Residents knew the town as the gateway to the valley, where train schedules and stage departures set the rhythm of daily life.
