Upper Yosemite Falls, pictured here in 1908, was one of California's best-known sights, a drop of roughly 2,425 feet that drew visitors to Yosemite Valley from across the country. The federal government regained control of the valley in 1906, after the state of California had managed it since 1864, and the surrounding national park was overseen by federal officials. Most travelers still reached the valley by stagecoach from railheads at the edge of the mountains, then stayed at hotels such as the Sentinel and the Stoneman House. The falls were the centerpiece of that trip, and in the early 1900s the growing tourist trade was steadily changing a valley once reached mainly by long mountain trails.
