Vernal Fall sits on the Merced River inside Yosemite Valley, about 317 feet of water dropping over granite just below the valley floor. In 1908 the valley was still a few years away from full federal control. The state of California had managed Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove since 1864, and the Yosemite National Park, created in 1890, surrounded the valley but did not govern it. Visitors arrived mainly by stagecoach from Merced and Raymond or by rail to those towns, then rode into the valley on horseback or in wagons. Hotels, tent camps and the Sentinel Hotel served a growing tourist trade, and the falls drew crowds who hiked the Mist Trail to the base of the cascade.
