Nevada Falls, on the Merced River inside Yosemite National Park, was one of the valley's best-known sights in 1907. Visitors reached it on foot or horseback up the granite trail beside the falls, and the spray at the base was a familiar part of the trip. The valley had returned to federal control in 1906, after decades under a state commission, and the park's tourism was growing alongside the new rail line that was pushing toward the foothills. Hotels, stage lines, and guided trips supplied the tourist trade, which mattered more to the local economy than logging or mining. For Californians of the time, Yosemite was a national landmark and a point of pride, one that drew travelers from across the country.
