Merced, the seat of Merced County in California's San Joaquin Valley, was in 1907 a farm town whose economy rested on grain, dairy herds, and irrigated crops. The Southern Pacific line had reached the town in 1872, giving growers rail access to distant markets and making Merced a shipping point for the surrounding countryside. Pleasant Valley, the farming district this view records, depended on the same irrigation canals and seasonal labor that sustained the valley as a whole. Town life centered on the county courthouse, churches, and fraternal lodges, and residents would have known Merced first as a market town serving its farms.
