Point Carmel, on the Monterey Peninsula in 1907, was a small seaside settlement that had grown up in the past few years around artists, writers, and summer residents drawn by its pine and cypress groves and its rocky shoreline. Its neighbors, Monterey and Pacific Grove, depended on fishing and the canneries that processed the bay's sardines, and the Del Monte Hotel in Monterey drew wealthy winter visitors from the East and from San Francisco. The 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco had sent many people south in search of quiet, and some of them settled on the peninsula. Point Lobos, just to the south, was a favorite place for walks and for painting the cypress and surf, and the Carmel coast was known then mainly for its scenery and its bohemian circle rather than for industry.
