Cypress Point, on the rocky western edge of the Monterey Peninsula, was still a wild stretch of coast in 1907, its wind-bent Monterey cypress trees clinging to the headlands above the Pacific. The land lay within the Del Monte Forest, largely held by companies tied to the Hotel Del Monte, a resort built by a Southern Pacific Railroad land company that drew wealthy visitors for golf, riding, and sea air. Seventeen Mile Drive, the scenic road that wound through the forest along the shore, was the main way visitors saw this country. Nearby, Monterey and Pacific Grove depended on the sardine fishery and its canneries, along with tourism and the railroad that linked the peninsula to the rest of the state.
