Mount Lowe, in the San Gabriel Mountains above Pasadena, California, was in 1907 a mountain resort built around the Mount Lowe Railway, which the balloonist and engineer Thaddeus S. Lowe had begun in the early 1890s. Visitors rode electric cars up steep grades, including the Great Incline, to reach the Echo Mountain House hotel and the observatory and its large telescope, and many came from Los Angeles and Pasadena for cool summer air and mountain views. The railway depended on the region's booming tourist trade, which had grown rapidly during the Southern California land boom of the 1880s and the citrus-driven growth of the San Gabriel Valley. The resort was a point of local pride, and the scene it recorded was one of a new leisure economy taking shape alongside orange groves and the growing cities below.
