Arrowhead Hot Springs, in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, was a mineral-spring resort in 1907, where visitors came to bathe in warm water. The Serrano people had used these springs long before American settlement, and by the early 1900s the site drew Southern Californians seeking rest and health cures. The resort sat within reach of the citrus belt around Redlands and Highland, where orange groves were spreading on the strength of irrigation and rail shipping. Railroads through San Bernardino tied the valley to Los Angeles and the coast, and many guests arrived by train and carriage from those towns.
