In 1907 the University of California stood on the slopes above Berkeley, across the bay from San Francisco, where the state's main public university had been based since it moved there from Oakland in 1873. The San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 had driven many families from the city, and the East Bay towns, Berkeley among them, grew quickly as a result. Under President Benjamin Ide Wheeler, the campus was adding buildings and enrolling more students, and the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, which opened that year, showed how closely the school tied its work to the state's mining and engineering economy. Students of the day knew the campus for its rivalry with Stanford, its athletics, and the Big Game, while the surrounding town still kept a semi-rural feel of orchards and open hillside.
