Yosemite Valley in 1915 was a national park only about two decades old, having been placed under federal control in 1906 after the state had managed the valley since 1864. Bridal Veil Falls, a ribbon of water that drops roughly 620 feet into the valley near the entrance road, was among the attractions that drew tourists arriving by stagecoach and, increasingly, by automobile from the Merced River stations. Hotels, camps and the Yosemite Valley Railroad, which reached the foot of the valley at Merced, shaped how visitors experienced the park. Conservation debates over damming and grazing were still active, and the valley was already promoted to travelers across the country as a landmark of the American West.
