Bagby, in the Sierra foothills of Mariposa County, California, was a small lumber and railroad settlement in 1908. Sugar pine logged from the surrounding mountains was the main source of work, and the mill and the sawed lumber shipped out by rail gave the community its reason for existing. The Yosemite Valley Railroad, which reached the region in the first decade of the century, carried both freight and tourists bound for Yosemite Valley, so residents saw a steady stream of travelers pass through on their way to the park. Like many mill towns of the period, Bagby's fortunes rose and fell with the timber market and the schedule of the company that ran its operations, and its population remained modest compared with the county seat and the larger towns of the San Joaquin Valley.
