Galveston, Texas, in 1910 was still recovering from the hurricane of September 1900, which killed thousands and drowned much of the island's business district. The city responded by raising the grade of the island and building a seawall along the Gulf shore, work that was largely finished during the decade and that protected the beachfront and the boulevards running parallel to it. Cotton shipping, the port, and wholesale trade had made Galveston one of the state's leading commercial centers before the storm, and its residents took pride in the grand houses and promenades that lined the Gulf. A view of the beach and boulevard from this period shows a community rebuilding its waterfront and its confidence in the island's future.
