Austin, Texas in 1910 was the state capital and a city of roughly 30,000 people, with its economy built on state government, the University of Texas, and trade in cotton, cattle, and lumber moving along its railroads. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas and the International–Great Northern lines brought goods and travelers into town, and the Colorado River provided water and power for mills and a growing number of small factories. Politics centered on the Capitol, whose granite dome dominated the skyline, and on the Democratic primaries that decided nearly everything in the state. Residents in 1910 would have known Austin as a quiet government town on the river's bluffs, still a few years away from the big expansion that followed.
