In 1910, Waco had passed 20,000 residents and was reinventing its cotton trade with a showpiece. The Cotton Palace, a fall exposition built around the staple that had long driven the city's warehouses and gins, drew visitors from across the region and put Waco's name in front of buyers and farmers. Downtown was filling with brick commercial blocks and offices, and the rail lines that fed them still defined the city's layout. Residents also took pride in their schools and churches, and in the growing number of automobiles beginning to share streets with wagons and streetcars. Those who lived there would have described Waco as a busy market town that was learning to sell itself.
