Dallas, Texas, in 1910 was a fast-growing railroad and cotton town, with about 92,000 residents by that year's census. Cotton bought, sold, and shipped from the city drew merchants and banks to its downtown, and several rail lines running through it made it a distribution point for the surrounding farm country. Department stores, wholesale houses, and the city's new office buildings reflected that commercial energy, while the Trinity River and its floods were a constant concern for city leaders and property owners. Residents of the day knew Dallas as the commercial center of North Texas, a place where farm wealth and rail freight met, and this view of the city captures that ambition as it stood before the taller downtown buildings of the next decade.
