Fort Worth, Texas, in 1910 was a rail and livestock town on the Trinity River, known as "Cowtown" and "Panther City." Its growth rested on the Texas and Pacific and Fort Worth and Denver City railways, and on the stockyards and meatpacking plants in North Fort Worth, which drew cattle from across the Southwest. The city's population had climbed past 70,000 in the first decade of the century, and downtown streets were filling with commercial blocks, hotels, and streetcar lines. Residents of the period also knew the city for its rougher reputation, especially the old Hell's Half Acre district, even as civic leaders promoted schools and churches. That same year, the Add-Ran college moved into the city and became Texas Christian University, a sign of the town's broader ambitions.
