Dallas, Texas, in 1910 was a growing city of roughly 92,000 people, and its prosperity rested on cotton and rail. Several railroad lines converged there, and the city served as a major marketplace for the cotton crop grown across North Texas, which drew merchants, bankers, and buyers to its downtown. That same year the city launched the Cotton Palace, a fall exposition that put the crop and the region's farm wealth on display for visitors. Dallas residents of the period knew their town as a commercial center on the rise, one that was outpacing many older Southern cities in population and business. The panorama captures that moment of expansion, when new commercial blocks and streetcar lines were reshaping a town that had only recently been a frontier trading post.
