Corsicana, the seat of Navarro County in east-central Texas, stood in 1910 as one of the state's first oil towns, a status it owed to the shallow oil field struck in 1894 while drillers were searching for water. A refinery built in the town in the late 1890s turned that crude into products, and the money from oil and cotton shaped the streets, shops, and new buildings of the 1900s. The Odd Fellows, a fraternal order that ran charity for members and their families, had established a home for aged and needy members and their dependents in Corsicana, which tied the institution to the town's growing civic life. For residents of 1910, the place was known as an oil town and a railroad and farm trading center, and the home was one of the places where the order's charity was carried out.
