San Antonio in 1910 was a city of roughly 90,000 people, anchored by the San Antonio River, which wound through the old Spanish missions and the downtown commercial district. Its economy rested on cattle, wool, hides, and freight moving along its rail lines, and Fort Sam Houston, established in the 1870s, made the army a steady presence in local life. Germans, Mexican Americans, and Anglo settlers shared the streets, and the Mexican Revolution, then in its early years, sent refugees across the border and kept the city watchful. Residents would have known San Antonio as the largest city in Texas at the time and the gateway to the Alamo, a site already drawing visitors from across the country.
