San Antonio in 1916 was a city shaped by the Mexican Revolution, which spilled across the nearby border and turned the Texas military presence into a major part of the local economy. In March of that year, Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, prompted President Woodrow Wilson to mobilize National Guard units and regulars along the Rio Grande, and San Antonio, home to Fort Sam Houston, became a staging ground for these troops. Camp Wilson, pictured here, was one of the temporary encampments where soldiers were housed, drilled, and readied for service on the border. Residents would have known the city for its military payroll, its growing rail connections, and the steady stream of uniformed men in its streets, even as the wider war in Mexico unsettled daily life.
