This 1917 panoramic photograph is labeled Camp Funston, Lions Springs, Texas, but I cannot confirm a Texas place by that name. Camp Funston was the wartime cantonment at Fort Riley, Kansas, named for General Frederick Funston. After the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, the Army raced to build training camps, filling them with barracks, mess halls, and drill grounds for draftees and volunteers. Texas hosted several of these, including Camp Travis near San Antonio, Camp Bowie at Fort Worth, and Camp Logan at Houston. Fort Riley's Camp Funston later became widely known in 1918, when an influenza outbreak broke out among its troops.
