In 1917, Waco, Texas, was a Brazos River market town built on cotton, cottonseed processing, and railroad traffic. That spring the United States entered the First World War, and the Army chose the land around the city for Camp MacArthur, a training post for the National Army's draftees and volunteers. The camp brought new payrolls, boardinghouses, and a steady flow of soldiers into town, and local businesses and the Baylor University community felt the change. This photograph shows the camp's officers, the men who were drilling new recruits into units for service overseas. For Waco residents, the post was the most visible sign that the war had arrived in Central Texas.
