Camp MacArthur was built in 1917 on the edge of Waco, Texas, as a training cantonment for the National Army, and by 1918 it housed the 77th Division, made up largely of draftees from New York City. Waco was a railroad and cotton-trading town on the Brazos River, and the camp brought soldiers, workers and visitors into its streets and shops. This view shows the base hospital, a complex of wards where medical staff treated men training for service in France. That autumn, influenza swept through army camps across the country, and hospitals like this one filled quickly with sick recruits. Local residents knew the camp as a major wartime presence that reshaped their town's economy and daily routines.
