Camp MacArthur, shown here in a 1918 panoramic photograph, was an Army training cantonment on the edge of Waco, Texas, built in 1917 as the country raised a large wartime force. The 77th Division trained there, drawing many of its men from New York City, so Waco residents hosted soldiers from very different backgrounds than their own. The base hospital pictured treated sick and injured trainees, a job that grew urgent in autumn 1918 when influenza spread through army camps nationwide. Waco was already a cotton-marketing and railroad town on the Brazos River, and the camp brought payroll, visitors, and new business to its streets. Locals knew it as the soldiers' camp that had reshaped their town almost overnight.
