Camp MacArthur was a World War I training cantonment on the edge of Waco, Texas, and in 1918 it was one of the largest military installations in the state. The camp drew young draftees, including many from the New York City area assigned to the 77th Division, and it filled a city that had long lived by cotton, railroads, and the trade that moved through its rail yards. Waco residents saw soldiers in their streets, and the influx brought new business for local merchants and boardinghouses. That fall, influenza swept through the crowded barracks and hospitals, and the camp was hit hard before the armistice in November brought talk of demobilization. For Wacoans, the camp was a source of both wartime pride and anxiety.
