Camp MacArthur, on the edge of Waco, Texas, was a World War I training cantonment built in 1917 and named for Arthur MacArthur, a Civil War general. Its 1918 dedication marked the camp's growing role as home to the 77th Division, whose men were drawn largely from New York and trained in the Texas heat and dust. For Waco, a river city on the Brazos that served as a rail and cotton-trading center, the camp brought soldiers, payroll, and new business to local merchants and boardinghouses. The camp's troops also shared the anxieties of the wider country that year, as the influenza epidemic and the approaching end of the war reshaped daily life. Residents of the region would have known the camp as one of the largest military installations in Texas.
