Camp MacArthur sat on the edge of Waco, Texas, in 1918, when the United States was deep in the First World War. The army had built the cantonment in 1917 to train infantry draftees and National Guard units, and at its height it held tens of thousands of men in rows of wood-frame barracks and tents. Waco, a Brazos River city of cotton merchants, wholesale trade, and rail lines, took in soldiers, families, and extra business, while its civic leaders promoted the camp as a source of pride and payroll. This view shows the hospital corps, the medical men who treated trainees struck by influenza and pneumonia that fall, a sickness that would soon fill camp wards across the country.
