In 1918, McLennan County in central Texas was built around cotton, and Waco, its seat on the Brazos River, served as a rail and trading center for farms across the surrounding prairie. The United States had entered the First World War the year before, and Camp MacArthur, built on the edge of Waco in 1917, was training soldiers of the 77th Division, so local families lived with news of sons heading overseas. Mothers' groups and war-relief work drew many women into public life, while churches, lodges, and clubs remained the main social gatherings in the county. Fred Gildersleeve, a Waco photographer, recorded these local groups in large portraits, and this one shows the women whose sons were part of that wartime effort.
