Fort Crockett, shown here in 1918, was an Army coast artillery post on Galveston Island, named for the frontiersman Davy Crockett and built in the years after the Spanish-American War to defend the Texas coast. That year the post's soldiers worked alongside a civilian population that depended on the port, the railroads, and the longshoremen who loaded ships at the docks. Galveston's wartime role meant its streets, boarding houses, and churches saw a steady flow of enlisted men on leave, while residents adjusted to rationing and to news of casualties from France. The fort's big guns and concrete batteries stood as a visible reminder to islanders that the war had reached their shoreline.
