Fort Crockett, on the Gulf side of Galveston Island, was an Army post in 1915 that guarded the entrance to Galveston harbor, one of the busiest cotton and shipping ports on the Texas coast. The city was still rebuilding from the hurricane of 1900, which killed thousands and left much of the island in ruins. The new seawall and grade-raising projects were reshaping the shoreline, and the military presence was part of the island's economy. In 1915 the United States Army was watching the Mexican border closely during the upheaval of the Mexican Revolution, and Texas garrisons like this one were seen as a source of readiness. For residents, the post was a familiar neighbor, bringing soldiers, payroll and social life to the Gulf shore.
