Fort Crockett, on the Gulf side of Galveston Island, was an Army coastal defense post in 1913, and the infantry regiments named in this view were part of the garrison stationed there. Galveston was then one of the busiest cotton and shipping ports on the Gulf Coast, with wharves, rail lines, and cotton warehouses tied to the mainland by causeway and bridge. The city was still recovering from the 1900 hurricane, which killed thousands of residents, and the seawall and grade-raising projects that followed were reshaping the island's shoreline. Across Texas in 1913, unrest along the Mexican border from the Mexican Revolution kept many army units on alert, and Galveston's soldiers were a visible part of civic life on the island.
