Fort Crockett, pictured here in 1914, was an Army post on the Gulf coast at Galveston, Texas, where the island's economy still rested on its cotton exporting and its deepwater port. The seawall that would protect the city was not yet finished, and residents still remembered the 1900 hurricane that had destroyed much of Galveston and killed a great many people. In 1914, Army units along the Gulf were watching the Mexican Revolution and the unrest along the Texas border, so a garrison of infantry regiments on the island carried real weight in local life. Soldiers at the post brought business to nearby shops and filled the island's social calendar, and the fort's coastal defenses guarded the approach to a city that prided itself on its commerce.
