Fort Crockett stood on the Gulf side of Galveston Island in 1918, when the United States was at war in Europe and the Army used the post to guard the approaches to Galveston Bay and its harbor. The island had been rebuilt after the hurricane of 1900 killed thousands of residents and flattened much of the city, and the seawall and raised grade that followed were still fresh reminders of that disaster. Galveston was then one of the leading cotton and shipping ports on the Gulf Coast, with rail lines carrying cotton, grain, and lumber to its wharves. Many islanders also knew the city for its seaside social life, its hotels, and its beaches, which drew visitors even as the military presence grew during the war.
